Greens Senator on war crimes and 2nd year war memorial

Greens Senator-elect Lee Rhiannon’s blog post (27/05) –  Will the Australian Government finally raise it’s voice for the Tamil people?

Standing among the 1000 plus Australian Tamils at Martin Place last week (18th May) to remember the Tamils massacred in the 2009 war in Sri Lanka, it was very obvious that the trauma for the community is still so deeply devastating.

What has become clear to me is that the Australian Government’s silence during and since the 2009 war adds to the pain the community is enduring.

My Greens colleague in NSW Parliament David Shoebridge in an adjournment speech last night addressed this point. While the UK, US and European countries are taking a stand against the human rights abuses committed under the Rajapakse Government, the Australian Government’s concern regarding Sri Lanka is minimal.

It was encouraging to see that at the recent forum organised by the The Australian Human Rights Commission the issue of Australia’s voice on Sri Lanka’s war crimes was discussed.

The question submitted by Dr Sam Pari from the Australian Tamil Congress was: “With war crimes and human rights violations forcing thousands of Tamils to jump on boats and come to Australia seeking asylum, should Australia be more vocal on the issue of war crimes?”.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay responded saying: “In this region Australia has a crucial responsibility to urge respect for rule of law and urge a end to impunity for serious crimes. Australia has ratified the Rome Statute which set up the ICC and in the preamble to the Rome Statute is that there has to be a determination to end impunity for serious crimes. So on one level you have countries like Australia ratifying and committing to ending impunity. There is a responsibility then for it to speak up and call for accountability in this region.”

As my colleague David Shoebridge said:

A generation of Tamils have been killed, brutalised and marginalised right under the gaze of the world, including Australia, and those who have been left behind are subject to a brutal military rule … I hope that soon the survivors are respected and remembered by the Australian Government as it belatedly raises its voice for justice for the Tamil people”.

When I enter Federal Parliament on July 1 I will continue advocating for the equal rights of the Tamils and all those living in Sri Lanka. The Greens have a deep commitment to speak up for those who suffer the injustice of discrimination, marginalisation and state sponsored terror.

Lee Rhiannon addresses the crowd gathered at Martin Place to mourn the loss of their loved ones during the 2009 war in Sri Lanka in which upto 40 000 Tamils were massacred.

5 week countdown – a msg from us

Dear all,
Happy New Year. Wishing you the best for 2011.
With only 5 weeks left till the NSW State election, Tamils for Greens are preparing for another exciting election campaign.
Since the last Federal election in which we saw Australia-wide support for the progressive Green vote, the Federal and state Greens have continued to build a strong relationship with the Tamil community, attending our events and speaking out on issues that are important to us:

1.  Federal Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has:

  • called for a full independent international investigation into war crimes in Sri Lanka http://bit.ly/i4v2x6
  • continued to advocate in Federal parliament for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers http://bit.ly/gTZb6W
  • maintained a very close relationship with many members of the Australian Tamil community regarding Tamil asylum seekers, children in detention, war crimes, detention facilities

2. Lee Rhiannon who will enter the Federal Senate in July:

  • spoke in front of more than 1000 ‘non Tamils’ about war crimes in Sri Lanka in a Wikileaks rally http://bit.ly/e8rj8G.
  • visited the Tamils in Villawood numerous times
  • attended the opening of Tamil Refugees Assistant Network and Patchwork office in Pendle Hill http://bit.ly/iewlp1
  • talked with various members of the Tamil community about pursuing war crimes in Sri Lanka through the Australian parliament
  • met with the head of GTF Father Prof. Dr. Rev. S J Emmanuel in Sydney

3.  NSW Parliament MP David Shoebridge (http://bit.ly/gk8JxP) addressed young Tamils at a community careers night in Sydney http://bit.ly/gkouM3

4. David Shoebridge and Lee Rhiannon while attending the Tamil’s Australia Day event publicly condemned the possibility of former Sri Lankan army officials taking up diplomatic posts in Australia

Although our community has traditionally illustrated interest in Federal issues,  the state Greens’ MPs Ian Cohen, John Kaye, Slyvia Hale, Colleen Hartland and Amanda Bresnan (to name just a few) have all been valuable allies and a source of strength and compassion during the Sri Lankan Civil War and in its aftermath.

As well as this, we believe the Greens policies at a state level are just as important to our everyday lives, families, education, health and economy.

Over the next few weeks we will keep you informed of these policies, such that you are able to make an informed choice on March 26th.

Remember, every vote counts and is important.

We will be in touch shortly, however if you have any questions in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact us.

Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon attends Tamil New Year celebrations

The month of Thai (starting on January 14 or 15) is considered very auspicious for Tamils.

It heralds the hope of a new era of prosperity and signifies the end of the harvest season. Many wait for the arrival of this month for celebrating a happy occasion or starting a new project.

The festival is known as ‘Thai Pongal’.

This year the Tamil community in Sydney invited Lee Rhiannon to celebrate ‘Thai Pongal’ with them at the opening of a community office in Pendle Hill for two community initiatives  – TRAN (Tamil Refugees Assistance Network) and Patchwork – Assistance for persons with disabilities affected by war.

Greens Lee Rhiannon speaks about SL war crimes to 1200 people

At the SYDNEY Wikileaks rally last Friday which had over 1200 protesters and more than a dozen journalists – Greens Senator-elect Lee Rhiannon in her speech mentioned the Wikileaks cable which named Mahinda Rajapakse as responsible for the massacre of the Tamils.

Lee Rhiannon also called for the Australian Prime Minister to back calls for a war crimes tribunal for Sri Lanka. From the audio recording of her speech [which we hope to attach to this blog post soon] you can hear that this was received with much applause from the protesters.

Part of the transcript is as follows:

[LEE RHIANNON] I would just like to give a couple of examples of how important this Wikileaks material is – how it can make a difference to the lives of people particularly in low income countries and I believe save lives. There was a cable sent by the US Ambassador in Sri Lanka on the 15th of January –  this is Patricia Butenis and she is referring to war crimes committed in Sri Lanka. I will just read out the words.  She says in Sri Lanka:

TAKEN FROM THE US EMBASSY CABLE : responsibility for many of the alleged crimes rests with the country’s senior civilian and military leadership, including President Rajapaksa and his brothers and the opposition candidate.

[LEE RHIANNON] Now that statement right now is putting pressure on government leaders – particularly western government leaders around the world to back a war crimes tribunal – and that is what is needed – and again if the Prime Minister of this country is to start restoring her integrity she should get behind it. War crimes were committed against the Tamil community, hundreds killed and injured, suffering continuing to this day, and the war crimes tribunal must be established. [END]

Along with Greens leader Bob Brown, Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and her other Green colleagues all across Australia – Lee Rhiannon has consistently shown her solidarity to the human rights and human dignity of all human beings including the Tamils who are continuing to suffer immensely at the hands of the Government of Sri Lanka.
